Well, we just shot our first sage rat of the 2012 season. With all the mild weather we've been having, the rats are starting to come out of their holes. We expect this year we will have a record number of sage rats. The fields still have leftover alfafa on them and this will mean lots of rats. We've been getting tons of calls and the fields are getting booked fast. With 14 fields this year we have tons of room but don't wait, call now and your name on the list.
We have some of the best sage rat shooting in the country. We can offer you fully guided or "self serve" shoots. Our fields offer shot opportunities from 5 feet to as far as your gun can reach. Also, we do not charge for children 12 years of age and younger , accompanied by a paid adult. We feel that getting children involved in hunting is very important.
What is a Sage Rat??
A Sage Rat is actually a beldings ground squirrel. They range from about the size of a hamster all the way up to a soda can. They have a high reproduction rate and can get out of control very fast. They hibernate from about July to February. So we generally have 5-6 months of shooting but peak shooting times are from about the middle of april until the middle of june, when the crops gets too high. When the year's litter starts emerging from the holes is when you can shoot out a barrel in no time. Offering shooting as fast as you can reload.
What should you expect from a rat shoot with Shooters Services Unlimited??
When you come to shoot on our ranch, expect to have a sore trigger finger. As it's not uncommon for our guests to burn up bricks of .22 shells per day. Expect to have a great time with family and friends, we can accomodate one person up to a family reunion. You should expect to shoot rats until you are literally too tired or sore. The rats are usually on a banker's schedule, so you can start shooting at 8-9am and run to about 5-6pm when the rats start to hole up. We can literally provide you with thousands of targets per day.
What Should I bring to shoot sage rats??
We recomend that all of our guests bring at least one rimfire rifle but you are not limited. Sage Rats can be shot with everything from a .22 to a .338 lapua, it just depends on what distant you want to shoot at. You should also bring alot of ammo. If it is a fully guided hunt we will provide everything to make you comfortable ie; sandbags, chairs, benches, food and water and if you do a "self serve" shoot you will need to provide your own. Here at Shooters Services Unlimited we do have a handful of shooting platforms that we allow our guests to use upon request but they are on a first come, first serve basis and our fully guided clients get first choice of platforms.
